Kyle (full name Kyle Harvey) was born in Reseda, Los Angeles, and grew up in Ventura, California. Though he was a shy child, due to a speech impediment, he began singing at the age of six and by the time he reached elementary school, he was also writing and performing. Drama lessons gave him improved confidence and by age 13, he had begun rapping. He was inspired to begin recording upon hearing Kid Cudi’s debut album Man on the Moon: End of Day.
2009-2012: Early mixtapes
In his late-teens, Kyle began to record under the moniker KiddKash and then later as K.i.D., releasing the mixtapes Senior Year, Second Semester, FxL, Super Duper, and K.i.D.
2013-2015: Beautiful Loser and Smyle
Kyle released his commercial debut mixtape (under the name Kyle), Beautiful Loser, in 2013. This drew the attention of the record label Indie-Pop, who went on to sign him.
In 2014, he was featured in G-Eazy's music video for "I Mean It" and went on to collaborate with G-Easy in 2015 on the single "King Wavy". That year, he also released "Just a Picture" featuring Kehlani.
Kyle’s second commercial mixtape, Smyle, was released on October 2, 2015. It features guest appearances from Chance the Rapper, Jesse Rutherford and Yuna, and charted on the Billboard 200.
2016-present: Breakthrough, Light of Mine, and See You When I Am Famous
Kyle’s breakthrough came in December 2016 when he released the single "iSpy" featuring Lil Yachty. The song became a hit for Kyle, peaking at number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the Canadian Hot 100, and has since been certified six-times platinum. This popularity led to a major-label deal with Atlantic Records, who signed him in February 2017.
That June, he was named as one of the ten 2017 XXL Freshmen.
In March 2018, he released the single "Playinwitme" featuring previous collaborator Kehlani. His debut studio album, Light of Mine, was released on May 18, 2018. The album features appearances from Kehlani, 2 Chainz, Sophia Black, Khalid, Take 6, Avery Wilson, Lil Yachty and Alessia Cara. It hit number 29 on the Billboard 200 and number 16 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
That August, Kyle starred in the Netflix original film, The After Party.
See You When I Am Famous, his second studio album, was released on July 17, 2020. The album features guest appearances from Tyga, Johnny Yukon, Rico Nasty, Rich the Kid, K Camp, Trippie Redd, Iann Diorr, The Drums, Bryson Tiller, Raphael Saadiq, AzChike, and Too $hort.
